well after the laptop the hubby got me for free decided to not work at all last night and much talking.... He bought me a brand new laptop, and it should get here the day after he signs off on leave. So once we get to japan, i should be able to play again. AS long as the hotel has internet, (which i did my research, and it does.) So at least i won't be completely bored while he's at work. ^^b. Got one of the cheapest dell had, with a few upgrades. Apparently the stock video card is crap, so i had to upgrade there for example. Yea i know dell mostly sucks, but it was the cheapest decent thing i could find, and hubby is boycotting newegg....sooo.... yea

I think Dell's great actually and that's pretty-much the same thing I got, and I love it. Worst problem I have with it is Vista sucking up resources, though that's mainly my fault for being lazy and staring at my copy of Windows 7. I don't have memory problems. Just annoys the fuck out of me seeing 1.2 gigs used when nothing's open or running except the OS. Only problem other than that is the keyboard on this thing is FUCKING STUPID!

Let me elaborate. You'll want to go into the BIOS to switch the F-keys' primary function to F-key. Otherwise it defaults to F-Key being the secondary function. So F8 alone is volume down, and to actually use F8, you need to use Fn+F8. Next, you have no num-pad. Not even a num-lock/Fn-key num-pad. If you want to play ffxi without a gamepad, you will actually have to download keyboard-mapping software (I used Auto-Hotkey), map yourself a num-pad "-" key, so you can actually open the main menu to switch your controls to compact keyboard (also it's kinda stupid to put that option in-game, rather than the ffxi config out of game, but w/e). After that, it's not so bad. If you want an actual num-pad, you can map one with Auto-Hotkey, but as the Fn key usage doesn't actually get sent to the OS, you'd have to use ctrl+shift+whatever. I did that at first but never used it cuz I'd forget which keys I used and wasn't gonna paint them on. lol. My next laptop will have a fuckin num-pad!

Other than that, good laptop. You'll like it.

Oh, I got bored of reading what you said, but yeah, noticed you upgraded the video card and if you didn't, I'd have just said "fail." I upgraded to a blu-ray drive, faster hard drive, and slightly better network card too, but the defaults are fine. Just make sure the first time you boot it up, you uninstall all the bullshit Dell throws in to make your laptop and their customer service seem all friendly and fucking annoying! Hate pre-built machines are always loaded with that junk. tongue

Dammit, totally not what I was hoping for when I opened this topic.

But then again, it's Aura so I don't know if it would've been all that great anyways.

Planning on it. I would of upgraded the other shit, but i didn't want to spend much more then i did on it. especially considering we had just paid off the dell card for my hubby's 2000 dollar xps. I have a hard time asking for stuff that expensive for my self. Once the warrenty is up tho, he plans on upgrading mine for me with some spiffier cards and shit. IE, better sound card, better dvd drive, bigger hd, etc. Granted I think 250gigs are gonna be fine for me, cause I'm only gonna have a few programs, FF11, possibly 14, and some music for when I don't want to put up with the in game music or want to change music on my ipod. Might spray paint a camo design on it later in lavender and blue, but again that will be after the warrenty goes.
oh and plan on use my xbox controller to play ff anyway. just configuring the buttons on it can be kinda a pain in the ass
Oh and die in a fire Kuishen.

Oh yeah, if you notice your laptop slowing down a lot every once in a while for seemingly no reason, check your running processes in task manager. If there's one that keeps randomly jumping up to retarded CPU-usage (like 50%+), you probably have the same problem as I did. It's something to do with the sound drivers that were installed when I got it, and I can't remember completely, but I'm pretty sure I fixed it by "updating" the drivers to a previous version. Could have also been a Vista issue, and you might not have the problem in Win7, but just giving you a heads up incase. tongue

nope... no problems with it slowing down. But have noticed that windows 7 doesn't like to automatically reconnect to the internet if the modem resets or loses connection for a couple seconds. Which gets a little annoying. But it might of been the fact that i was downloading 30 gigs worth of stuff today. Who knows.

on a side note, windows 7 networking fails hardcore. Hubby and i tried to connect our laptops using the homegroup thing..... and failed... >.>.... i can see his, but he can't see mine. or it won't connect at all. So thanks windows for failing yet again at networking.
